University Advisory Group announced

The University Advisory Group (UAG) has been established to provide the government with advice on New Zealand's university system.

This group will be chaired by Professor Sir Peter Gluckman and other members will be announced shortly.

Group members will consider challenges and opportunities in the university sector including:

  • ensuring quality in research, teaching and knowledge transfer
  • delivering graduates that address national workforce needs and challenges
  • connections to wider New Zealand society through collaboration and partnerships
  • funding mechanisms and the role of the Performance Based Research Fund
  • ways to best achieve equity for all learners and
  • the role of international education.

The group will provide an initial report to the Ministry of Education in August 2024 and a final report in February 2025. Advice from the group will inform policy changes. The Ministry of Education and the Tertiary Education Commission will provide UAG secretariat support.

Separately, the Science System Advisory Group, supported by MBIE, has also been established to provide advice on improving the effectiveness and impact of the science sector in New Zealand. The Science System Advisory Group will also be chaired by Professor Sir Peter Gluckman who will make connections between the 2 advisory Groups as appropriate.
